What does it mean to be a volunteer, especially a volunteer for a film festival?
This is a question so ordinary that we usually do not explore it during interviews. It is also a question so prominent that we have been pondering it from the moment we read the very first resume, right up to the instant before sending out the acceptance emails.
During the month-long recruitment and selection process, we witnessed the richness and diversity of the youth every day. This richness and diversity challenge almost all the current stereotypes about young people, and make us even more eager to see how you will interact with the equally rich and diverse ecosystem of the festival.
Human beings are accustomed to defining a specific period of time with concepts, but when we actually walk through these times, we find that what can be etched in our minds is often concrete things: a simple meal, a drink of water, a moment of laughter or tears... They are scattered and trivial, but strung together, they form the texture of memory. It is the same for a film festival; what gives a festival its underlying tone is not so much the layers of halo, but rather those concrete and minute details—the gazes and held breaths, the displays and appreciations, the inspirations and excitements, and the careful deliberation over words and visuals when transmitting all of this to the world. These all embody the authentic and unique personality of a film festival.
This is perhaps the irreplaceable meaning of being a volunteer for a film festival. When you come into direct contact with concrete tasks one by one, your senses will receive signals from all directions, collectively forming the silhouette of a film festival that belongs only to you. And when you reach out your hands to help these concrete tasks overcome obstacles on the ground and move forward, this silhouette will become ever clearer, ever closer to the golden ratio between the ideal and reality.
The volunteer list for the 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) is officially released. We extend our congratulations to all the selected volunteers and invite everyone to come to the island bathed in warm breezes this December, to build the unique film festival in your minds through one concrete task after another.
For those applicants who regrettably were not selected, we have also formed a partnership. Although we cannot meet face to face for the time being, just as the ocean connects all islands, the concrete things that fill this world also connect us. We hope you will set off from beside yourselves and under your feet, marching ceaselessly beyond the horizon, which is in itself charting a course for us to approach each other.
The 7th HIIFF is about to begin. We hope to meet the volunteers soon, to join hands in pulling open the curtain and welcoming the surging audiences.
