The 7th Golden Coconut Awards

The 7th Golden Coconut Awards comprised three sections: Feature Film, Documentary and Short Film. The call for entries ran worldwide for 99 days and drew a record number of submissions, including 788 feature films, 403 feature documentaries and 3,373 short films. After preliminary and second-round reviews, 14 feature films, 6 documentaries and 10 short films were selected, from more than 20 countries and regions, to compete for ten awards.

Marco Müller

Renowned Italian film producer, curator, professor of film history, and film critic. He has served as Artistic Director and Chief Consultant of the inaugural Pingyao International Film Exhibition in 2017, and as President of multiple international film festivals including the Venice International Film Festival; as well as Artistic Director of the Venice Film Festival, Pesaro Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, and Locarno Film Festival. During his tenures as President of major international film festivals, he has successively brought the outstanding works of numerous Chinese directors to the international stage. In 2022, Marco Müller served as Artistic Director of the 4th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF).

The 6th Golden Coconut Awards

The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival was hosted by China Media Group and the People’s Government of Hainan Province. Using film as a medium, it showcased Hainan’s charm and vitality to the world and sought new momentum for the development of China’s film industry.

Luc Besson

Luc Besson, a French director born on March 18, 1959, boasts an extensive filmography, having directed, written, and produced more than 150 films.His works, such as Léon: The Professional and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, earned him César Award nominations, and he won the Best Director César Award for The Fifth Element.He competed with American studios through Taken and The Transporter, both produced entirely by French teams. Lucy remains the most commercially successful French film worldwide.The Academy of Cinema Arts awarded him an exceptional gold medal during the 40th César Awards. Among his directorial highlights, The Big Blue (1988) is considered one of his most iconic successes.

The 5th Golden Coconut Awards

The 5th Hainan Island International Film Festival brought outstanding films from around the world together in competition. Screenings continued the island-wide model, running in Haikou, Wanning and other locations as well as Sanya.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Turkey director, screenwriter, editor, producer, cinematographer. Nuri Bilge Ceylan began by acting in a short film directed by his friend Mehmet Eryilmaz, towards the end of 1993, he began shooting the short film Koza (Cocoon), the film was screened at Cannes in May 1995 and became the first Turkish short to be selected for competition at the Cannes Film Festival.He directed a number of films including: Kasaba (The Small Town), Mayis Sikintisi (Clouds of May), Uzak (Distant), İklimler (Climates), Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys), Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Winter Sleep, Kuru Otlar Üstüne (About Dry Grasses).

Aiming at year-round screenings, island-wide screenings, cinema for all and the full industry chain, the 1st Hainan Island International Film Festival set out to build a professional and international “festival that never ends”. It opened at Haitang Bay, Sanya on Dec 11.
