The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) announced today the Top 15 shortlist for the Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp. The core creative teams of the Top 15 shortlisted short film projects will be invited to participate in the Young Coconut Project workshops, final pitch, and other events in both Beijing and Hainan. The Top 8 short film projects selected through the final pitch will each receive 120,000 RMB in funding to support the filming and production of their short films.
Closely aligned with the theme of "Shoot in Hainan, Shoot Hainan," many of the stories in this Top 15 shortlist are related to Hainan. The Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp looks forward to these short film projects coming to fruition in Hainan, using the medium of film to showcase Hainan's unique cultural landscapes and shape an entirely new spatial experience.

The industry section of the 6th HIIFF launched the Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp (HIIFF Talents) for the first time. From the release of the recruitment announcement on July 10, 2024, to the registration deadline at 24:00 on September 6, a total of 475 valid project applications were received within 59 days. In the final three days before the deadline, we received a total of 282 applications, showing a clear trend of "last-minute submissions."
Among the numerous applicants, young creators born after 1995 account for over 75%, while nearly 10% of creators born after 2000 also actively participated in the application for the Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp.
The academic backgrounds of the applicants are rich and diverse, encompassing various film professional fields such as directing, film studies, screenwriting, cinematography, sound recording, animation, and production management, while also extending into multiple other disciplines including law, physics, electronic information engineering, management, and psychology.
Most of the creators have graduated from or are currently studying at renowned domestic institutions such as the Communication University of China, Beijing Film Academy, Central Academy of Drama, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai Theatre Academy, Shanghai University, Hong Kong Baptist University, Macau University of Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts.
At the same time, many creators possess overseas educational backgrounds, including Vancouver Film School, London Film School, University College London, University of California, Berkeley, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, University of Southern California, Kyoto University of Art and Design, New York Film Academy, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Academy of Art University in San Francisco, EICAR Paris International Film and Television School, Emerson College, Columbia University, and Chapman University Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.
Among the 475 project proposals documents, keywords such as "family," "friendship," and "love" appeared repeatedly, revealing the current young creators' enthusiasm for writing about individual experiences. In terms of specific genre distribution, life-oriented projects such as family, campus, romance, and children's stories accounted for a very high proportion, while classic genres such as sci-fi, suspense, crime, comedy, action, fantasy, and road movies also showed the potential for future commercialization as feature films.
The Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp supports artistic expression while also anticipating commercial possibilities. It aims to inspire young filmmakers to capture and express their current creative passions in diverse forms, and to immediately shape this enthusiasm into the cornerstone of their future works.
After rigorous evaluation and panel discussions by the judges of the Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp, 15 short film pitching projects ultimately stood out and were successfully shortlisted for the Top 15 of the Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp.

Closely aligned with the theme of "Shoot in Hainan, Shoot Hainan," many of the stories in the shortlist are related to Hainan: some characters live in Hainan, some set out from Hainan, and some will travel to Hainan... The Young Coconut Project Pitching Training Camp looks forward to these short film projects coming to fruition in Hainan, using the medium of film to showcase Hainan's unique cultural landscapes and shape an entirely new spatial experience.
In the Top 15 shortlist, we see more stories and emotions of the "present," as well as some scars and doubts of the "past." These private memories intertwine with rich narratives, injecting new vitality into the genre texts that lie static in textbooks.
Next, the core creative teams of the Top 15 projects will be invited to participate in the Young Coconut Project workshops in Beijing and Hainan in late September. They will engage in face-to-face exchanges with mentors, receive multi-dimensional professional guidance in directing, producing, screenwriting, editing, and acting, and have the opportunity to visit Hainan for location scouting and research. Following the workshops, the Top 15 shortlisted projects will enter the final pitch stage, and the ultimately selected Top 8 short film projects will receive 120,000 RMB in financial support to complete their subsequent filming and production.
