HIIFF "Bright Cinema" Public Screening Event Held

On December 20, the 5th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) "Bright Cinema" charity screening event was held at Sanya Mangrove 1+X Cinema, where over 50 individuals with disabilities watched the accessible film Lighting Up the Stars together.

The "Bright Cinema" was jointly initiated by the Communication University of China, Beijing Gehua CATV, and Dongfang Jiaying. It is China's first accessible film charity project with university faculty and students as the main volunteers. Since becoming a regular screening section of the HIIFF in 2019, "Bright Cinema" has conducted charity screenings at the festival for five consecutive years. While enhancing the project's visibility and influence at home and abroad, this event calls on more compassionate individuals to pay attention to the spiritual and cultural needs of the visually impaired group, jointly building a "cultural blind path" that highlights humanistic care and disseminates cultural achievements, and interpreting the social value of the HIIFF with practical actions.

This special screening selected the popular film Lighting Up the Stars, which was made into an accessible version by the "Bright Cinema" project team. Focusing on "life and death" and "emotions," the film tells a heartwarming story of mutual salvation and shared growth between an encoffiner and a little girl who has lost a beloved family member, composing a soul-stirring song of love and warmth. During this screening, descriptions of the visuals were inserted in the gaps between dialogue and sound effects, helping the visually impaired group to understand and follow the movie, thereby further enriching their spiritual and cultural life. At the same time, leveraging the platform of the HIIFF, it shares with the world China's solutions for accessible audio-visual communication and the development of human rights.

A relevant person in charge in Sanya stated that the "Bright Cinema" project conforms to the requirements of the times and practical needs, enabling visually impaired friends to enter cinemas to watch movies, enjoy more convenient public cultural services, and foster a favorable social atmosphere. In the future, it is expected that, relying on the "Bright Cinema" project, Sanya and the Communication University of China can continue to expand more areas of cooperation, enrich the carriers of cooperation, and cultivate more brands and projects, allowing the achievements of cultural reform and development to benefit the citizens and tourists of Sanya more broadly, effectively, and extensively.

Sun Lei, Vice Mayor of Sanya; Lu Jubo, Party Secretary and Chairman of Sanya Media and Film Group; and Hu Fang, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication at the Communication University of China, attended the event.
