The Balance of Curation
Curation is not merely about selecting films; it is about balancing historical vision with future insight, providing a platform for directors to showcase their individuality and creative aspirations.

2025 · The 7th HIIFF · Masterclass
Marco Müller, Italian film producer, scholar, and curator, President of the 7th Golden Coconut Awards Jury
Marco Müller's career has always been interwoven with two core threads: cultivating the art of curation on the stage of global film festivals, and building a bridge for Chinese cinema to reach the world through a cross-cultural perspective. Since the 1970s and 1980s, navigating between Chinese and international festivals such as Venice, Locarno, and Pingyao in the dual capacity of scholar and curator, he has explored the positioning and expression of film festivals across different cultural contexts, profoundly influencing contemporary curation concepts and the industry landscape. Meanwhile, he has witnessed and propelled the international journey of Chinese cinema, from the rise of the Fifth Generation directors and the growth of the Sixth Generation auteurs to the emergence of a new generation of directors, serving as a vital bridge for Chinese cinema to "go global."
Centered on his career, this Masterclass takes the audience behind the scenes to explore "the other side of film festivals." On one hand, it traces the evolution of curation concepts at global film festivals, discussing how festivals can balance their artistic origins with market dialogue within the new industry ecosystem. On the other hand, it focuses on the evolving international expression of Chinese cinema, exploring new pathways for contemporary Chinese cinema to converse with the world, as well as the role of festivals in empowering young creators and building platforms for international exchange.

Curation is not merely about selecting films; it is about balancing historical vision with future insight, providing a platform for directors to showcase their individuality and creative aspirations.
Compared to "collective creation," he prefers the term "tribe," believing it to be more inclusive and better at preserving the creative individuality of its members.
“Tribe”
The mission of a film festival is to find audiences willing to embrace new experiences, which can start with sections that blend genre and auteur elements.
