4,330 Films! Submissions Report for the 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) Released

The global film submission for the 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) opened on July 4, 2024, and closed on September 20.

During the 79-day submission period, the 6th HIIFF received a total of 4,330 films from 117 countries and regions through a combination of open submissions and targeted invitations, fully demonstrating the festival's international influence and cultural cohesion.

Among the submitted films, the linguistic diversity is particularly striking. There are films in common languages such as Mandarin, English, Spanish, French, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian, as well as films in less common languages like Bhojpuri, Ganda, Icelandic, Māori, Rajasthani, and Sranan Tongo. One film even uses seven languages. Language is the world, and diverse languages express the unique cognition of different nations regarding themselves, their history, and their reality. Linguistic diversity can even be said to be the most important prerequisite for the diversity of film culture.

In terms of themes and genres, the submitted films are equally rich and diverse, covering numerous keywords such as "social issues," "intimate relationships," "family," "drama," and "comedy," fully reflecting the creators' vivid experiences and keen insights into specific social realities through the medium of film.

As an indispensable technical foundation of film aesthetics, different choices of visual medium can enhance specific narrative atmospheres, tonal rendering, and emotional expression. At a time when digital cameras are widely popular, many submitted films still opt to shoot on 16mm or 35mm film. On the other hand, it is clearly evident among the submitted films that the narrative use of various pre-digital electronic analog images (especially "home videos") has become a remarkable international trend.

In addition, 2% of the submitted films employ black-and-white imagery, whose unique artistic expressiveness evokes memories of film history while endowing the films with a distinctive aesthetic experience; 7% of the submitted films feature both black-and-white and color imagery, where the juxtaposition and contrast of colors convey richer emotions and themes.

There are also submitted films that boldly challenge the traditional creative paradigms of various film categories, exploring the combination of documentary and fiction, as well as the integration of realist narratives with fantasy, thriller, and other genre films from different perspectives, showcasing the innovative spirit of these filmmakers.

In terms of the age composition of the creators, those born in the 1980s and 1990s serve as the main force, accounting for 33% and 34% respectively, while directors born in the 2000s are also beginning to emerge, accounting for 14%. At the same time, we are pleased to find that directorial debuts account for as high as 65%. These young creators will inject new vitality and new perspectives into the international film industry, thereby driving the entire film ecosystem forward. For this reason, discovering new talents and supporting emerging filmmakers has always been the guiding principle of HIIFF.

The 6th HIIFF will continue to dedicate itself to promoting the exchange and development of film culture, building a broad platform for global film enthusiasts to showcase and appreciate outstanding cinematic works.

Seeing is the first step in discovering the unknown world, and film is the unique record of every step of that discovery.
